Want better aluminum welds?
Don’t Strike an Arc Until You Test Your Argon Flow
If you want clean, consistent TIG welds on aluminum, there’s one simple step that too many welders skip—testing your argon flow on a scrap piece first.

Why? Because the cleaning action of the AC arc only goes where there is shielding gas.
Too little flow, barely any cleaning area and your puddle gets peppered and milky.
Too much flow, and you create turbulence that causes a loud erratic arc, ruining your chances of a good bead.
By taking just a minute to strike up on a scrap piece of aluminum, you can see right away if your cup size, gas lens, and flow rate are dialed in.
It’s a simple down & dirty test that works

Hang in there Jody, looking good. Thank you for all your help and excellent service at Weld monger.
I have been a follower for many years and you have taken me a long way from a “Fido butt” steel MIG welder to being slightly competent at aluminum and SS TIG welding. Coming to the craft from 43 years as a dentist it has been very rewarding being able to bring my creative projects to fruition and I have you to thank for your educational donation to the art of making welding possible for a guy like me. Bless you with all the medical hurdles before you that you get through them and be able to enjoy the rest of your life. 🙏🏼
Really appreciate the information. I have learned a lot.
Jody, I am 78 years old and have welded since I was 13. Still learning from you and others and still in the game as well.
Medically, I am the $ 6 Million Dollar Man – with budget cuts. Up every day at 5 and on the go 7 days a week. My advice – don’t quit! Nolan
Jody, I am 78 years old and have been welding for over 50 years. Pretty much self taught (not necessarily a good thing) and I have been watching your videos for a long time. Learn something each time. Really appreciate your effort to do this. My prayers are with you.
i tig aluminum routinely as a hobby. but i never thought much about the relationship between argon flow and cleaning area. i found the flow vs clean circle demo very helpful.
my brother in-law went through chemo and a bone marrow transplant for his multiple myeloma. it was for a bit but he came through it well and is still happy and healthy today. not bad for a procedure that was done almost twenty years ago
I’ve watched your videos since maybe 2009?. Just heard about your health adventure. Can’t say enough how much your expertise has helped me in all my projects. Every time I get stuck or get into unknown territory your knowledge has guided me through. Here’s to your healthy recovery and many thanks for all that you do.

Great to see the actual factors used in the welds. Great idea to put a camera on the amps as you go so you can see what you are using.
Thanks for the hard work.
You are in my prayers. I,m a retired tool & die maker, but never considered my self a welder. I do ok.But what I
do know is what you have taught me over all these years. God bless you for helping us through out the years.

I would stick with no pulse to see if that helps you get better.
