This VERY Popular TIG welder goes out of stock quite a lot but since it is back in stock I decided to drop this video showing aluminum settings I used for several different welds on different joints and thicknesses. The primeweld TIG 325x has a low 5 amp start on DC as well as great amperage range up to 325amps for thick aluminum. I don't know of any other 325 amp tig welding machine that is this affordable and where the company has a great track record of customer support. Two of the main challenges with tig welding stainless steel are: 1. distortion 2.maintaining stainless properties Stainless steel is not very thermally conductive so heat can build up easily. that is why I always suggest getting a puddle started quickly and getting moving quickly.

A bridge tack does not penetrate the sharp part of the bevel. Bridge tacks are not always permitted. Penetrated tacks are when the tack weld fully penetrates and breaks down the sharp edges of a bevel and for stainless pipe, purging with argon is a necessary step to avoid granulation aka sugaring.

New products being added weekly Walking the cup is mostly for pipe and socket welds but if you dont have access to pipe coupons the next best thing is plate. I used 3/8" plate with some tracks made with a grinder to keep me straight. 160 amps at first but bumped amperage to 170 and that seemed about right. I used a primeweld mts200 mig, tig, stick welder and a 17v torch with a valve.

Travel speed is one of the biggest factors when it comes to overall heat input. But with manual tig welding, you can only go so fast before things are out of control. excessively slow travel speeds can waste time and cause other problems like distortion and loss of mechanical properties in the heat affected zone. Too fast a travel speed can increase risk of porosity on certain joint types and that can be a problem if the welds are subjected to X ray testing. (rt) Still, it often pays to increase travel speed in certain applications to improve the economics of the job.

On my first job TIG welding aluminum, 2% thoriated was the only type tungsten they had. So I had to figure out how to sharpen it for the best results. All the tig welding machines were transformers in that shop so I would use DCEP aka reverse polarity to slightly round a tapered tip on 2% thoriated and it seemed to work better than other methods.

A very common joint in welding school is a 3F vertical tee joint TIG weld. you might think this is a pointless weld joint but it is actually good training for socket welds. 140 amps 3/32" ER70S-2 filler rod #6 gas lens cup with 15-20 CFH argon flow rate I like to walk the cup but there are times when you just can't. when you have to prop a TIG finger really helps you concentrate on the weld instead of how bad your fingers are burning.

https://weldmongerstore.com I repaired a high carbon steel pin for a piece of gym equipment as a favor and so for this video, I thought I would mock up the repair using a piece of drill rod to show how I went about the weld repair. Normally, I turn down jobs like this but since it was such a quick job, I welded it. It is still holding up a year later and I think a lot of it is due to using 312 stainless filler metal and the extra fillet I made with that second pass. Aluminum is very thermally conductive but when you are welding near the end of a piece of tubing, the piece gets saturated with heat and the puddle gets very watery. This video shows a quick tip to prevent heat from building up too much. A wad of aluminum also helps but copper really pulls the heat out of a part.
