DenaliWeld Laser Video Series

denaliweld laser welding demonstration and tig welding stainless steel

Jody Collier |

DenaliWeld Laser & Stainless Lap Joint with TIG

I went to a Laser Demo put on by DenaliWeld at a local gas and supply store and that led to me visiting their headquarters in Chicago and learning more about laser welding. I showed a short clip of tig welding a stainless lap joint first just to make the point that the attendees at the laser welding demonstration were able to pick it up much quicker than someone trying to learn TIG welding on stainless steel.

I have a few questions myself like….

  • how thick can it weld?
  • What metals can it weld?
  • Can it weld dissimilar metals?
  • What are the limitations?
  • What are the safety issues?

Is Laser 5X Faster than TIG?

From the previous video I posted., the consensus seemed to be that folks wanted to see a cut and etch test on these laser welds. So I did quite a few cut and etch macro etch tests on both stainless and aluminum.

If I had to do a ton of stainless sheet metal welding, I could see myself dropping 25k to pick up a fancy new 2kwatt toy laser. But it would take a lot of work for this to make good financial sense.

Anton,

I have trying to get in touch with Denaliweld and no one is returning any of my emails. I want to know which machine would be best for me and roughly what the cost of the welders are. can you help me?

Thanks in advanced and thank you for your videos, they are great.

Clint Beveridge,

Hi Jody,
Thanks for the laser welding video. Please keep it up. My question: is the laser machine process using a filler metal like MIG.? How about Argon? It kind of looks like filler metal and argon are not part of the process.
Thanks

Jack,

What is the cost of the 2000 watt and 3000 watt Lazer welder?

Jay H Wolkowisky,

Not a likely candidate for use on my welding truck what with water cooling and reflection hazards. And sometimes your out-of-shop welding site may need a little of stick and a little of MIG and perhaps a little of TIG. I don’t see this laser welding integrating well with all the other types of welding I do and transport.

Skip Gorman,

Hey, I would like to see some cross cut sections with the acid and swab test like you do on your videos to see the penetration of those welds. Looks to much like a gimmick to me. I guess I’m to much old school. Enjoy your videos. I’m 66 years old, 36 years at current shop and a mobile rig and still given it hell everyday. Thanks Ike G.
