6011 Stick Electrode Amperage Chart

Electrode Size

Amperage Range

Notes

1/16" (1.6 mm)

20–40 amps

For thin sheet metal and delicate welds. Use with care to avoid burn-through.

3/32" (2.4 mm)

40–85 amps

Common for light fabrication and repairs up to 1/8" thick material.

1/8" (3.2 mm)

75–125 amps

Versatile size. Suitable for 1/8" to 1/4" thick steel. Good for general repairs.

5/32" (4.0 mm)

110–160 amps

Best for heavy-duty or structural welding on thicker materials.

This chart shows recommended amperage ranges

for E6011 welding rods based on diameter.

These settings work for both DC+ and AC welding.

The PrimeWeld MIG180 is a sweet mig welder that also does stick

Tips:

  • Start at the middle of the range and adjust upward if the arc is unstable or the rod sticks.
  • Use lower settings for vertical uphill welds.
  • Always practice on scrap material before welding critical joints.

6011 welding rods work with most inverter welders, engine-driven welders, and AC buzz boxes.

Here’s a comprehensive list of benefits of using 6011 stick electrodes in welding:

🔩 General Benefits of 6011 Electrodes

  1. Deep Penetration
    • Excellent for welding through rust, paint, oil, or mill scale.
    • Suitable for poor fit-up or dirty metal conditions.
  2. Fast Freeze Characteristics
    • The arc solidifies quickly, making it great for vertical uphill, downhill, and overhead welding.
    • Reduces the chance of sagging or dripping when out-of-position.
  3. AC and DC Capability
    • Can run on both AC and DC (straight or reverse polarity), making it versatile with various machines, including low-cost AC welders.
  4. Strong Arc Force
    • Produces a driving arc that helps with keyhole welding and penetration into thicker material.
  5. All-Position Welding
    • Rated for flat, vertical, overhead, and horizontal welding.
    • Ideal for field repairs or awkward welding positions.
  6. Good for Outdoor Welding
    • Works well even in windy or less controlled environments compared to gas shielded processes like TIG or MIG.

📏 Size-Specific Benefits of 3/32" Diameter

  1. Lower Amperage Range
    • Can be used with small, low-power welders (like 110V inverter stick welders).
    • Runs well between ~40–85 amps depending on polarity and base metal.
  2. Thin to Medium Thickness Metal
    • Ideal for 1/8" to 1/4" thick steel.
    • Less likely to blow through thinner materials compared to larger rods like 1/8" or 5/32".
  3. Better Control
    • Smaller puddle is easier to manage for beginners.
    • Useful for small repairs, fine work, or welds that need more precision.
  4. Smoother Starts & Restarting
    • Easier arc initiation compared to larger 6011 electrodes.
  5. Less Spatter Than Larger Electrodes
    • When properly run, 3/32" tends to produce a cleaner arc with minimal cleanup.

🛠️ Use Case Benefits

  1. Farm and Field Repairs
    • Excellent for fixing gates, trailers, implements, and rusted equipment.
  2. Maintenance and Repair Welding
    • Works well on contaminated or coated steels where TIG or MIG wouldn’t.
  3. Versatile for Hobbyists and DIY
    • Ideal for welders who need one go-to rod for most jobs.
