CUSTOMER VIDEO 11 VERTICAL UPHILL MIG AND TIG
The topic of this video is vertical uphill welding with both TIG and MIG.
MIG welding downhill is easier than uphill. But there are times when you really should weld uphill for better penetration. Especially on 1/4" and thicker steel.
For Short Circuit MIG welding uphill, using the recommended settings usually does not work out well.
So what I often do is I still use the MIG settings chart but I use settings for a lower thickness and then reduce wire speed by about 10%.
For the 1/4" thick steel lap joint in this video, I used settings for 1/8" thick steel but lowered the wire speed and it worked out ok.
TIG welding a 11ga vertical lap joint
For the 1/8" thick lap joint in the video, I used 110 amps.
If the piece was flat on the bench I would have probably used 120 amps or more because I would have been more comfortable and my travel speed would have been faster.
TIG welding vertical uphill usually goes just a bit slower than flat on the bench and is mostly a matter of getting comfortable and finding a way to be steady.
But sometimes finding a place to prop is sometimes difficult.
If you have a TIG finger in your pocket, then you always have a way to prop.
A steady hand welds better.
