TIG WELDING OVERHEAD MIG WELDING OVERHEAD

Customer Video #10 OVERHEAD WELDING WITH TIG AND MIG

The theme for this video is Overhead Welding

The first topic is TIG Welding 11ga Carbon Steel overhead.

With TIG welding, overhead welding is a mot about being comfortable and positioning your body where you can see the puddle best.

The puddle with Tig welding is small compared to Stick or MIG and its easy enough to control so getting comfortable is key.

I set the machine amperage to 120 amps and pressed the foot pedal all the way down during the middle of this weld.  Of course I ramped up and down on the foot pedal on the ends.

The same 3 basic things apply on overhead tig welding as any other position.

  1. Keep a tight arc length
  2. Limit your torch angle
  3. Keep the hot tip of filler wire shielded with argon

The second topic in this quick video is welding overhead with short circuit mig.

I used a primeweld mts200 welder with voltage set to 20 and wire speed set to 300 using .035"ER70S6 wire.

Another setting this welder has is inductance and I set it to 10 or maximum.

I will get into inductance deeper in future videos but setting the inductance on this welder to 10 made for a smooth arc.

2 of the main things that help with short arc mig overhead are…

  1. Keeping a short stickout
  2. Limiting gun angle

Either a slight push or slight pull works just fine and so does a straight on 90 degree angle.

In my experience, using extreme angles is where bad things happen like lack of penetration or excessive spatter.

Great videos I learn something with each one, keep them coming

Love these short, instructional videos, Jody. Absolutely fantastic. Please keep them coming.

I love these short videos. And I love your pointing out that there is nothing wrong with stopping and restarting in order to get comfortable again, or, better still, to ensure you don’t get uncomfortable. You don’t get told that in welding school.

Lovely nugget in that MIG cut and etch. Another thing I never got told in welding school was about wire feed speed: it was implied that the voltage and wire speed are matched within a narrow range. I never stop learning from these videos.

Thanks, Jody.
