TIG Tips for Carbon Steel Restarts
TIG welding Carbon Steel lap joint and Restart Practice
Making a smooth Restart on a TIG weld is a skill worth practicing.
There are plenty of reasons why...
You might need to sneeze or cough, You might want to skip around to avoid heat build up and distorton.
Whatever the reason, being able to restart smoothly is a great skill.
Fortunately, restarts are fairly easy with carbon and stainless steels.
There are several techniques that can work for restarts but what I do is just start my arc in the center of the crater and then increase my amperage to where the puddle matches the crater...then I move ahead and dip rod.
Simple right?
But if you have never given restarts much thought, you might benefit from some practice.
Another thing that makes for smoother restarts is good gas shielding.
Having a restart area that is free from oxidation allows for a smoother restart.
