Customer Only video 14 - A 5G pipe Test that Changed my life

A 5G pipe Test that Changed my life

Back in the late 1980s I was working in a fab shop and I volunteered for a job that no one else wanted...Making molds for lead radiation shielding.

That meant getting a 5G pipe certification because in that shop we had to be certified for everything...even temporary lead molds.

Fast forward to my first month as a TIG welder at Delta Airlines TechOps maintenance base.

My first month working for Delta i noticed a lot of guys flying in from all parts of the country to take a weld test and they were failing miserably with no one to help them pass.

It was a big waste of company resources.  The 5G test was overkill for Ground support mechanics but that was the test.

Some of them were ok mig welders but had never taken a weld test before.

Guess what test they were taking

5g mig.

I volunteered to help and with a few hours of training most of them passed the 5G test.

That got the managers attention and later on when he was promoted he asked me to manage the new training and certification program for Delta TechOps.

Sometimes being lucky is better than being good.

A sliver of Gods favor is even better.

Some might thing all of the is just coincidence. But there is a lot more to the story.

Stay tuned for more...

Jody,
My brother-in-law is a retired Delta pilot. He’s told me how much he appreciated the ground crew. A good number of his flights were in nasty weather – up to Alaska and northern Canada. Those cross winds and temperature differential puts a LOT of stress on the aircraft and components. Thank God for guys like you that paid close attention to your welds! You kept thousands of passengers and crew safe!!! He wanted me to send you a heartfelt “thanks”.

Sage advice. Your advice is good, regardless, but if your employer is decent and recognizes hard work done well, your advice is great.
