How NOT to TIG Weld Aluminum & Down&Dirty tips

The video above shows one of the BIGGEST problems with aluminum fillet welds and how to Fix it.

Getting started off on the right foot is important with aluminum fillet weld.

If you start welding before the metal has a chance to sink into the root, it can be difficult to recover and the weld will likely have the dreaded lack of fusion aka LOF.

Arc length is a big factor and so is rod placement for that first couple of dabs.

Just slamming filler rod in the puddle is not the best way.

  • With a tight arc , increase the amperage until both members start to puddle.
  • Dont be in a rush, wait a few extra second and then dab just enough filler rod to join the two pieces.
  • then wait a couple of seconds to let the heat soak in and progress the puddle forward.
  • IF the puddle does not want to move with you, then wait a few more seconds until it does.
  • Once the puddle necks down into the root of the joint and moves forward easily, you can get in a rhythm and get to welding.

Clear Cups help me see the puddle, the joint, the crack, where I need to weld better.

I started using clear cups strictly for filming.  I was skeptical at first but I quickly learned that they help me see much better because they light the path much like a light bulb.

If you are in your 20s with great eyesight, maybe you don't need any help seeing.

As for me, I am in my mid 60s and I can use help seeing.
